Mechanically Timed Engine
This is as close to the real thing as it gets. A four stroke engine (intake, compression, power, exhaust) or (suck, squeeze, bang,
and blow)
I managed to get a 2:1 crank to cam ratio by using rubber band ends
on the crank cause you can't do it with sticks. I had to use 2 cams
cause I can't mount 2 lobes on one cam. I got lifters running off the
lobes, push rods and rockers transferring the force to the valves.
Both cams are timed with the crank. I attached timing marks for
easier viewing. Since its mechanical, yes you can control the speed .

Warning: Over revving the engine may cause it to jump out of proper
timing, may also cause engine parts to go flying.
CAUTION: over revved engines may cause bodily harm and or death

- Jun 09, 2012 alfajim: @Rubicon: my ignition timing's given me an idea, if I can make the crank switches reliable enough to work at different speeds, it might be possible to make a rocket powered piston. Rocket on a motor and the timing turns it through 180 degrees or even just 90. :-)

- Jun 09, 2012 Rubicon: @joshthegrate: Actually the timing is pretty close to being right on, if you run it at around half throttle. If you go too fast the cams will skip teeth. The disadvantage here is that the lobes are too rounded so the valves won't close fast enough. If you know anything about engine you'll even notice the valve overlap between exhaust and intake strokes.
